Why is their continued presence important?
Of course new users will take their place if they leave, but until now Digg has been a passionate favorite of it's users. Just under 4 months ago, Netscape's Digg-like redesign sparked such a revolt on Digg that users hacked the site using cross-site scripting (java script include) creating a pop-up window telling visitors to leave and visit Digg.
Passion is powerful. Digg's users are passionate. However, when Digg's users are no longer passionate, they'll be just another site and any number of those Digg clones may begin to see traffic. When these power users leave, they'll go somewhere. Digg will be important, but one of many sites competing for the space.
In order to hold onto domination of the market share, they've got to continue to inspire passion. And to inspire that passion, they've got to keep their power users AND their normal users happy.
