Tweenagers have been an established demographic for years. I can remember buying TeenBeat and TigerBeat as a tweenager, long before the internet (well, 1986-89), but eMarketer's latest look at
Tweens online really gives you a good look at how times are-a-changing.
When the firm asked youngsters which technologies they would miss the most, television came first, but video games and the Internet were close behind — and the Internet beat TV by a wide margin among the older teen group.
Particularly shocking is the how much they're searching. 66% of them use the internet for research, 66% for games and 62% use search engines. That's a profound shock. You'd expect research to be there, but not quite so high.
So, the next social thing we can expect is to see a teen search engine that allows you to filter by most common searches and allows you to connect to some of the searchers who tagged that search.

I've checked out the sources you link to, but I don't see any references to music downloading or podcasts. Can't tell if these weren't asked about or if if they were and they just aren't used. I've blogged about a similar topic here:
