According to MarketingVox Online Dating Conceives New Type of Identity Theft...Online Dating Conceives New Type of Identity Theft where your philosophy of life, online profile and even your artwork can be used by others without your permission or awareness: "...Online daters increasingly feel as though they must sell themselves like a product. The heavy personal promotion that results from this mindset turns people into prime prey for identity thieves of all shades. Over 50 online daters reportedly stole lines from a witty college entrance exam that writer Hugh Gallagher wrote 20 years ago. The paper later appeared in Harpers."
In the Wall Street Journal a few weeks ago an article appeared titled The Cut-and-Paste Personality provides examples of identity theft happening on online dating sites: "...Hugh Gallagher, a 36-year-old writer in New York, is one of the copied. Match.com has more than 50 profiles with parts of Mr. Gallagher's college entrance essay, which he penned nearly two decades ago and later appeared in Harper's Magazine. "I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees" and "I write award-winning operas" are among Mr. Gallagher's most popular lines."
Here's the video of Gallagher's profile being robbed from him:
