Kapalua Resort of Maui, Hawaii Enters the Social Networking Scene with a New MySpace Page

I reported recently that Maui Pineapple Company had created its own MySpace page, and now I’ve discovered that its sister-subsidiary company, Kapalua Resort, located on Maui, Hawaii, has done the same. Kapalua Resort and Maui Pineapple are subsidiaries of the same parent company, Maui Land & Pineapple Company, so it makes sense that they are stepping hand-in-hand with their marketing efforts and tapping into the power of social networks as a marketing and promotion vehicle.

Kapalua Resort announced their new MySpace page on their blog, KapaluaNews.com. Their MySpace page can be found at www.myspace.com/KapaluaResort. You can see they have a few friends there already and belong to a few groups; they also provide some very fetching photographs of Kapalua and the surrounding area, as well as some useful versions of their company logo. It’ll be interesting to see how many friends and fans they can garnish. I’m sure there are a lot of people on MySpace who love to vacation, especially to such beautiful places as Kapalua on Maui, Hawaii.
New Home on MySpace for Maui Pineapple Company

I have noticed that businesses and companies are increasingly using social media and social networks to help promote their products and services, as well as connect with their customers.
SocialThumbs - sounds interesting

Just kinda wondering if you can decide issues in your life by asking enough people? I mean, the idea would be to explain it well enough that people could understand and decide to vote up or down on any issue.

But the problem is - it was hard to actually set something like that up - but now, according to Read/WriteWeb, you can Crowdsource Your Decisions with SocialThumbs

SocialThumbs nixes the "interesting" column and simplifies things by limiting scoring to plus or minus 5 -- where as de Bono's scoring system was arbitrary.

Ha, ha, ha ... can you imagine - but you'd really need to figure out how to present your idea to get the best and fairest vote - not sure how you do that.

Plugged in Mood Rings from Emoodicon

I was just thinking if your feeling a certain way but don't want to verbalize it - there's now a solution, according to B.L. Ochman (who I also happened to bump into at Caroline's Comedy Club the other night):Emoodicon - Plugged in Mood Rings: Go Buy One.

According to B.L.:

This is my new Emoodicon - the updated version of the mood ring - sent by my friend, and Emoodicon's inventor, artist John T. Unger.

Go get yourself one. And while you're there, get several for the geeks and digital natives in your life. They are going mad love Emoodicons.

How Emoodicon rings work: the glass top of the stainless steel ring screws off so you can insert the emoticom disk that displays the mood you want to show the world at the moment. Smileys, frownies, and symbols for shy, ROFL, devilish, bugged, and others familiar from email are included in the set of 25 that comes with each of the techie mood rings. You store them inside the ring and change them when the spirit moves you.

I guess, with social media, it's also nice to be able to "flash" non verbal signals to your community - I guess the old "mood ring" works for this.

US Lagging in Social Media according to a new global study of social media

Surprising that for all the Social Media that goes on in the United States - the U.S. Lags in Social Media Creation, according to a Survey conducted by Universal McCann.

Consumers in the U.S. and Western Europe are more likely to be passive social-media participants -- sharing videos and reading blogs -- while those in emerging markets often create content through blogging, social networks and video and photo sharing sites.

"By and large, in the U.S. we're a country of voyeurs," said David Cohen, U.S. director of digital communications at Universal McCann, which conducted the study. "We love to watch and consume content created by others, but there's a fairly small group that are doing that creation -- unlike China, which is a country of creators."

Strange, but I thought the United States was the leader in Social Media usage, but I think we need to compare active creation vs. consumption - which this study does.

Tom Smith, a research manager for the EMEA region at UM, said the gulf exists because blogs play a different role in the societies. In China, for instance, blogs tend to be about daily life rather than current affairs.

"Blogging in Western Europe and U.S. has been less of a community but conveying your opinion on different topics," he said.

Because of how widespread blogging is globally, UM declares it "rivals any mass media in terms of reach, time spent and wider cultural, social and political impact." For that reason, blogs represent an accurate reflection of trends and consumer opinions, according to the agency.

It seems that Social Media applications are becoming more intelligent and more desktop friendly as evidenced by Twhirl, Twitter, Friendfeed and Seesmic all working together - The Twitter/FriendFeed Desktop Client Arms Race Continues (from TechCrunch) and Loic Le Muir (who I met at LeWeb3 last December) made a video about the new features of Twhirl (which he recently bought via Seesmic):

Publizing your dirty linen all over the internet - Tricia Walsh Smith

I don't think anyone's marriage is perfect and I don't know who to feel more sorry for, the woman (Tricia Walsh Smith) in this video says she's being evicted by her rich husband (who she also keeps saying won't or can't have sex with her) or the rich husband, who everyone now knows, can't have sex with her (or doesn't want to) and his daughter, who wants the wife kicked out.

The apartment in the video seems so "empty" and stale, and I could swear I've met this lady in NYC somewhere - maybe not her, literally, but her type, empty as the apartment she claims to be evicted out of - and probably a little drunk when the video was shot.

See for yourself:

And yet, there's really no absolute right and wrong - we don't know the whole story and maybe, the husband will make an online video and say the wife is a gold digger.

So, will Social Media get us any closer to the real truth? Do we even what to know the truth here - or does seeing her troubles make ours seem lighter (or not)?

I don't know - but every time someone who is pissed at their partner and has story which is somewhat interesting - stuff like this, stuff that could probably not have happened before, gets circulated all over the Internet.

And how is that going to affect her settlement - you'd think it would be worse now - but then, let's face it, if her story is true, she had little to lose.

And what will people do when they have little to lose? Make a YouTube video accusing their partner of eviction? As amusing as this video might seem, I can't say that I like it's implications.

But see for yourself and watch the video.

Twitter Polls with PollDaddy Twitter Polling

Just noticed that polling has come to Twitter and PollDaddy launched a new service called PollDaddy Twitter Polls that lets you set-up an online poll and send out a tweet that informs your followers about the new poll according to Bloggers Blog

"...The polls are easy to use. The poll includes a description of the Twitterer who posted the poll. There is also a comment form where people can comment or maybe add a write-in suggestion. There are quite a few people testing PollDaddy's new Twitter tool out on Twitter today. As with any service if it is overused it could become annoying."

Also noted today that Ads may be sold soon on Twitter - which might dampen the enthusiasm Twitter has had over the last year or so it's existed among followers - and honestly, while Ads and Polls are good features, I think the reason why people use Twitter are not for these things - but as a form on instant and personal communication.
